Vectorial transport of bile salts into bile is a major driving force for bile formation. Bile salt transport involves uptake from portal blood, intracellular processing and export from the hepatocytes into the bile canaliculus. Uptake of bile salts at the basolateral side of hepatocytes is performed mainly by Ntcp1, the Na+-taurocholate co-transporting polypeptide2'3, recently renamed SlclOal and, presumably to a lesser extent, by Oatps, organic anion-transporting polypeptides4, including Oatpl (Slc21al). Export of bile salts across the canalicular membrane into bile is predominantly achieved by the ATP-dependent bile salt export pump, BseporAbcbll.
