Bacterial cell count (BCC) and somatic cell count (SCC) are significant characteristics of raw milk BCC and SCC indicate the hygiene of dairy farming, influence purchasing price value, determine raw milk processing into foodstuffs or further processing into casein or lactose. For rapid BCC and SCC count the Bioluminescent Assay (BA) is used often. We developed the Lumtek bioluminescent test-systems for BCC (detection limit - 5xlO4 CFU/mL, duration of assay - 20-25 min per sample) and SCC (detection limit 104 cell/mL, duration of assay is 2-3 min per sample) raw milk assays. Lumtek test-systems comprise: 1) portable highly sensitive PMT-luminometer, 2) ready-to-use kits, long shelf life reagents and disposables, 3) assay protocol Lumtek test-systems proposed were examined in an independent research centre (Yaroslavl State Laboratory for Raw Milk and Dairy Research). BCC Lumtek test-system was compared with Standard Plate Count (SPC) and Fluoro-Opto-Electronic Count (FOEC) SCC Lumtek test-system was compared with Direct Somatic Cell Count (DSCC), FOEC and Viscosimetric Assay (VA). Statistical analysis of the data obtained showed a good correlation between Lumtek test-systems and standard assays.
