As part of IFFs continuing program of looking at unusual natural products we recently analyzed Piper longum L. (Long pepper). This is a slender aromatic climber with perennial roots occurring in various parts of India. The dried spikes are 1-3 cm long, 4-6 mm in diameter and are grayish to dark in color. The fruits/spikes are pungent and have a pepper like flavor. Long pepper is used as a spice and in pickles and preserves. It is also used to treat bronchial trouble and as a carminative and analgesic. Numerous terpene and sesquiterpene compounds were identified, along with a number of dienamides. Several of these amides were identified in Piper longum for the first time and from synthesis studies we were able to show that individual amines imparted, to a lesser or greater extent, a 'tingle effect', when tasted.
