The invention relates to a novel simple, rapid and efficient method for the isolation of piperine from the fruits of piper nigrum, roots and fruit spikes of P. longum. The method involves extraction of the fruit powder with acetic acid, from which piperine is partitioned into appropriate organic solvent selected from the group comprising aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic hydrocarbons, ethers, esters, ketones, amides, alcohols or mixtures thereof, and purified by recrystallization subsequently. The yield of piperine by the above method was better than that got by the existing methods reported. Drawing: NIL Total Pages: 8 Fig. Nil
