Evaluation and expression of protein allowances and protein value of feeds in the MADC system for the performance horse

MADC system was performed by INRA in France. This system provide sets of tables that give protein value of the feeds and the nutrient requirements of the horses respectively (INRA, 1984). Both are expressed according to the same feed evaluation systemMADC for protein. The goals of this system in relation with the UFC system stated for energy (cf. Martin-Rosset and Vermorel's report in the issue) is to allow: 1) an accurate comparison of the nutritive value of feedstuffs; 2) the formulation of well balanced rations to achieve a production goal; 3) the prediction of the animal performance when amount and quality of rations are known. The validity of the MADC system was tested through many feeding trials using mares, growing horses and working horsesto state the new french feeding standards (Martin-Rosset et al., 1994). This system was updated in the years nineties by the same INRA group on the bases of further experiments carried out on nitrogen digestion namely (Tisserand and Martin-Rosset, 1996).
