Pen-based oral fluid sampling for PRRSV using an improved PRRSV PCR assay is highly effective for the detection of virus in low prevalence populations

The objective of this study was to estimate the probability of detecting one PRRSV viremic pig in a pen of ~25 pigs using a single oral fluid sample from the pen. This study was conducted in a confirmed PRRSV negative (serology and PCR) finishing site. All animal housing, handling, and veterinary care was approved and supervised by Murphy-Brown LLC and were in compliance with PQA plus and the guidelines published in the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Agricultural Research and Teaching (Federation of Animal Science Societies, Savoy, IL).
