摘要

Streptococcus suis infections in pigs are associated with different clinical signs such as meningitis, arthritis, pneumonia, endocarditis, and septicemia.1 S suis may infect humans and is recognized as an important zoonotic pathogen.2 Clinical diseasein humans varies from meningitis to sudden death associated with Streptococ-cal Toxic Shock-like Syndrome.3' The first US case of human S suis meningitis was recently reported in a New Yorker farmer.5 A serological survey has also revealed that farm workers are more likely to seroconvert to S suis serotype 2, indicating that they are in close contact with this pathogen.6 Currently, there is limited information regarding the characteristics and zoonotic potential of S suis isolates associated with meningitis in US swine herds.
