During last years advances in e-Learning have focused on the description of digital contents for education. Basically, main achievements have been centered on development of specification formats to describe learning content and learning metadata. Additionally, there is an ongoing trend to understand Learning Management Systems (LMS) as an eLearning shell where learning material can be specified and included on it in a similar way than a component in a software system. At the same time, such approacl -based on the definition of a collection of open standardized specifications- has opened the eyes of eLearning industry that, accordingly, foresee the benefits of an eLearning market based on standards rather than focusing their developments on isolated platforms and proprietary specifications. Actually, models of e-Learning are founded on a LMS in combination with Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS), are based on 4 principles: 1. Separation and formal specification of learning content, from learning management systems 2. Structure learning material into reusable components (Learning Objects) 3. Provide a framework of interoperability between different LMS's as well as an standardized architecture 4. Create description formats to search and retrieve distributed and reusable learning material (learning metadata).
