Russian diplomatic policy and Korean reunification

Dismantling the Cold War era's last remaining military barrier and building permanent peace on the divided Korean Peninsula is unquestionably a tough process facing numerous obstacles that sometimes look insurmountable. There will be a rocky road ahead for the two Koreas to achieve a basis for peaceful coexistence pending reunification in the wake of the deadly confrontation of the past half-century. Given the earlier hostilities and the intricate geopolitics involving major global powers, the current controversy over Seoul's position regarding U.S. missile defenses and anti-terroristic warfare is yet another hurdle to be overcome in the process that is now underway. Additionally, The interests in Russia of South Korea, Japan and the United States also are not identical. America's main concerns with Russia are first to ensure that Russia's military capabilities remain permanently inferior to theirs - in other words, to make Russia lose its military superpower status and second to transform Russia into a truly democratic and capitalist state. Japan's relations with Russia are more complex. In view of the close contacts between these northern neighbors, there has been speculation by some experts and the mass media regarding the possible formation of a tripartite strategic coalition among them, similar to the tripartite coalition among South Korea, the United States and Japan. The latter coalition was formed primarily to coordinate the policies of the three parties on North Korea. Depending upon the future development in the security environment in Northeast Asia, it can develop into a strategic coalition dealing with a wider range of security issues in Northeast Asia. In these complicated world context, the Korean unification have to need coordination of major global powers. In my perspectives, Russia has regarded outsider to reshuffling korean unification. This viewpoint is very dangerous because of potentiality of Russian international diplomatic and military power. Especially I'd like to stress the deep knowledge of Russian-Korean relations. Russia is ready to use the potential of its relations with both South and North Koreas for the benefit of a Korean settlement. Russia wants to expand its influence on issues surrounding the Korean Peninsula, from which it also hopes to gain economic benefits. So Russia is anxious to play a role in the Korean peace process. In fact, this country places great importance on establishing peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and would spare no expenses in assisting the ongoing rapprochement process between Seoul and Pyongyang. Russia need a long respite and a peaceful world environment. Therefore, they do not want North Korea to become a prodigal son. Russia is prepared to contribute to these processes, as well as in the context of advancing our global initiatives on missile non-proliferation. Additionally, Bilateral regional security, mutual economic cooperation between the South korea and Russia will increase mutual national interest. The peaceful process, cooperation and reunification between the North and the South should develop on the basis of principles agreed upon by the Korean people. Whether International politics, for example, major powers like it or not, Super great powers, especially including Russia, must do it. That is their responsibility for world peace and the stability of Korean peninsular.
