DOES Y2K GST MAKE AUSTRALIA READY FOR ADDRESSING COMPLEXITY?

On the cusp of the millennium, resolution of the Y2K bug is rated as the world's largest co-operative peacetime experience. At an enterprise level, where technology is an integral part of its processes, a resultant effect of the Y2K experience was enterprise-wide knowledge. Unfortunately, this inherited enterprise-wide knowledge has gone unnoticed by management and with it vanished significant benefits that could have resulted. Amazingly however, in Australia the life of this enterprise-wide knowledge was extended and its quality enhanced by the timing of mandatory taxation legislation that impacted all enterprises. We therefore propose that Australia has a chance to recognise and harness this enterprisewide knowledge to its advantage. To discover how this can be done, we examine the Australian situation and canvass a way forwards in the context of complexity that is a hallmark of managing today's enterprise.
