The purpose of this study was to design a computerized support system for developing teaching materials in the area of "Information Study" - a new subject area in the Japanese high school curriculum beginning in 2003. One aim of developing such a system is to implement it in teacher-training programs. At present there is no teaching or research occurring in this new subject area, and so the system should have two main functions. The first is to understand the characteristics of lessons and materials in the area of "Information Study". The second is to help teachers learn to develop instructional materials appropriate for high school teaching conditions. They will need to consider such factors as objectives, students' interests, the learning environment, and so on. In order to develop an appropriate system, we designed a lesson model for "Information Study". Then we discussed the necessary features of teaching materials. A procedure for developing teaching materials was proposed and the framework for designing the support system was discussed.
