The successful developments of halogen-free and lead-free assembly compatible (environment-friendly) PCBs are two great progresses of worldwide PCB industry. New type of micro drill bit and router bit are developed to provide solutions for processing these environment-friendly PCBs. A brief introduction is presented first to cover the background, the objective and the methodology of this study. Then the challenges of micro drilling and routing for halogen-free and lead-free assembly compatible PCBs are described. The influential mechanism of key parameters of drill/router bits on their performances is investigated. Design examples of drill bit and router bit with excellent overall performances are presented. The recommendations of drilling and routing parameters for environment-friendly PCBs are considered. Experimental results confirm that a micro drill bit with small helix angle and optimized helix groove shape is beneficial to drilling environment-friendly PCBs. Furthermore, the presented router bit is an appropriate candidate for routing environment-friendly PCBs as the life of router bits is significantly increased and the peripheral quality is satisfactory.
