Survey Development for a Study of the Effects of CI Tools and Implementation Practices on Hospital Performance

A survey was developed to measure the relationship between continuous improvement (CI) implementation practices, the use of specific continuous improvement tools, and hospital performance as measured by room prep time, patient costs per day, lab result wait times, reportable errors, patient satisfaction, and employee satisfaction. The survey included four sections: 1) a section for demographic information, 2.) a two-part yes/no section on CI activities, 3) a section of 34 yes/no questions on CI tool usage, and 4) a section with three open-ended questions on CI activities. A 14-step process was developed for survey administration and is also described.
