Theorizing an Emotional Intelligence/Organizational Commitment Relationship Affecting Job Performance

This paper posits a theory that a relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Organizational Commitment could impact job performance. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a concept that reflects an individual's awareness of his/her own emotions and the emotions of others, correct identification of those emotions, and ability to decide how to proceed based upon this knowledge. Organizational Commitment (OC) reflects an employee's desire, need, and obligation to maintain employment in an organization. A wealth of prior OC research includes studies evaluating factors that increase or decrease commitment and its relationships to various parameters, such as job performance. While Emotional Intelligence has not been studied as extensively, there is still ample research in the literature documenting the concept and examining relationships with other variables. However, there is little empirical research that has evaluated EI and OC and a potential link to job performance. Should this theorized relationship establish a correlation between EI and OC and, thus, influence an employee's job performance it would be of vital importance to organizations and their success. This knowledge would be valuable in further expanding the field of Engineering Management and improving leadership in engineering management.
