1. Our interpretation: Uniform ALD deposited Al_2O_3 barrier layers do not belong to European definition of nanomaterials, 2. No significant increase in particle count in laboratory air was observed. Particles stayed attached to abrased surface and abrasive discs, 3. Migration from thin Al_2O_3 layer deposited on plastic films to typical food contact simulants exceeded limit value set for non-authorized substances in Europe, 4. Impact of simulant on migration, functional properties and surface chemistry depends on substrate and oxidizing precursor (and thus on thin film structure), 5. ALD Al_2O_3 requires top layer to protect it from stresses, to prevent migration, and to act as a sealant.
