Fundamental Study on Micro-Actuators Driven by Liquid Crystalline Backflow

In order to develop new liquid crystalline micro-actuator,the mechanism of the backflow between two parallel plates induced by the electric field was studied using the Leslie-Ericksen theory.The effects of twist angle,applied voltage and the gap between two plates on the backflow and the free upper plate were calculated.The induced backflow is strongly affected by the twist angle on its direction and magnitude.Along with the increasing of the twist angle,the velocity and moved distance of the upper plate decrease.On the other hand,when the applied voltage and the gap increase,both the velocity and moved distance increase.We can develop micro-actuators with arbitrary characteristics by controlling the twist angle,applied voltage and the gap.
