A New Measuring Method of the Young's Modulus for Flexible Materials

A new bending test method for measuring the Young's modulus is proposed. This method is based on bending by means of axial compression. Some charts are drawn on the basis of the large deformation theory. Since no loading device is attached at the mid-region of a specimen, this method overcomes the undesirable effects of loading nose, which are common for conventional three- or four-point bending. Based on this new idea, a set of testing devices was designed, and various kinds of flexible materials were tested. It is made clear that the new method is suitable for flexible materials.
