The development of engines involves carefully balancing many performance characteristics to achieve optimal designs. These characteristics include, importantly, emission levels and power output. Experimental design and empirical modelling can be used to build models that estimate engine characteristics for design optimisation. this paper compares two modelling strategies, conventionla polynomial modelling, and a more advanced statistical method based on spatial modelling. using data from a set of real test-bed diesel engine experiments these methods were used to estimate a range of responses for design optimisation at fixed speed/torque points. In addition the techniques were extended to produce torque profile models to estimate engine response at fixed speed and varying torque values.
