A Comparison of Coal Preparation among Australia, Canada, China, Russia, and USA

Historically, coal preparation within particular country has been performed by domestic or regional design construction groups. Design and operations varied based on available technology, customs and/or necessity. During the last 30 years, the industry has experienced minimal capital or technical investment. Key personnel have retired and not been replaced. The result is an international preparation community with limited resources and technology. This trend began to change in the late 1980s and has accelerated with the rapid expansion in the coal preparation during the last five years. Sedgman, being the largest engineering / construction group in the world specializing in coal preparation, was in a unique position in its ability to respond to the global communities demand for experienced manpower and advanced technology. We continue to be the only major coal pressing engineering / construction group with a global presence. Through our experience, particularly in the last five years, Sedgman has developed, and will present in this text, a unique insight into the difference in technology, design, capital and operating costs for the various counties, including Australia, Canada, China, Russia, and USA. Included is an overview of the current conditions in each country.
