The converter valve is critical in HVDC transmission system, meanwhile its reliability facing Special electromagnetic environment special electromagnetic environment threat is significate to be studied from a strategic prospective supported by USA government. Unfortunately, existing reliability evaluation methods at component-level are not suitable in such an extreme environment. In this paper, main failure mechanisms of the most vital component under high special electromagnetic environment press-pack thyristor, are analyzed, and a new physics-of-failure lifetime prediction method is proposed based on loading condition and operating conditions considering concrete internal cooling system of the valve. With the abovementioned method as the basis, reliability evaluation for the whole converter valve system could be derived. The precise analysis process and analytical results are presented to indicate this method and the main damage effects of special electromagnetic environment.
