APPLICATION OF PREINSULATED ABS PLASTIC PIPING SYSTEM IN A BURIEDCHILLED WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

The problems of insulation failure, corrosion and unsatisfactory installation plague directlyburied chilled water systems particularly in wet soil conditions.These issues are discussed with reference to the design and installation of the 9000TR chilledwater distribution loops for the Aga Khan University campus in Karachi, Pakistan the site ofPakistan’s first district cooling system where a pre insulated ABS piping system withpolyurethane insulation and HDPE casing has been employed.Design details of the distribution loops, piping system selection criteria, construction andinstallation details, heat losses, expansion issues and results of thermal performancedemonstrating the advantages of the technology are presented in this case study.The use of plastic pre insulated piping systems in direct burial chilled water applications is likelyto simplify the design and installation processes leading to a much wider acceptance of districtcooling in many parts of the world where designers, owners and contractors have shied awayfrom these systems.
