TREE AND ME: A 2nd ORDER CYBERNETIC VIEW: TOWARD A SCIENTIFICALLY GROUNDED SPIRITUAL PRACTICE, UTILIZING A GENERAL EVOLUTIONARY SYSTEMS MODEL

This paper will weave together and extend thematic threads from three previousrndiscussions: one from the author’s 1998 ISSS paper, which discusses science, art,rnphilosophy, and religion as manifestations of Homo’s emerging/emergent quest forrnunderstanding, seen as innate human spirituality; a second from the author’s 1993rnAmerican Society for Cybernetics [ASC] paper which discusses an aspect of Homo’srnneural mechanism, that “Thought is structurally inseparable from our experience of it”;rnand a third from the author’s 1998 Institute on Religion in an Age of Science [IRAS]rnworkshop, TREE and ME, during which the author illustrated through her own theoreticalrnorganizational model and poetry her experience of “insight”; along with an additionalrnpiece that, for the author, the “insight” experience itself is a fulfilling spiritual/religiousrnexperience.
