The paper attempts to identify the deterrents thedeterrents for fast boot experience in embedded Linux-basedsystems and proposes a new idea with new results for betteruser experience during system boot up. The novel softwarepartitioning scheme in combination with an adaptive mountingorder is proposed in this paper is a self adaptive mechanismapplicable to embedded infotainment devices in general. A newbreed of home entertainment and low end computing deviceswith local processing power like Set Top Box (STB) with PClike features, Thin-clients, Telemedicine client, and others arein vogue with growing sizes of external flash storage devices. Itis always observed that a considerable amount of time iscontributed to mount the external flash storage device, withinthe total time required from boot up to first user application.Measurement shows that the adaptive mounting orderimproves the initial user experience by 25% in an 80MBNAND Flash (50% improvement in mount time), which willtheoretically scale up for an application software with largerfootprint.
