摘要

The paper provides an overview of the development and content of APCOM symposia since theirrninception in 1961. This development is set within the context of the academic environment in whichrnmuch of the research published at APCOM symposia is conducted. This environment includes rigorousrnexternal assessment of research quality at national levels and against international benchmarks,rnwhich carries signifi cant consequences for funding and for the continued existence of the academicrnminerals industry disciplines. Adverse consequences that undermine the academic provision ofrnmining and resource engineering will impact negatively on the minerals industry by reducing thernlevel of research and education resources available to it.rnThe traditional reductionist approach to research is contrasted with the inter-disciplinary approachrnthat is required to address the complex systems problems that the minerals industry will have tornaddress to ensure its technical, economical and environmental sustainability. Such an approachrnoffers a means of raising research profi les, of establishing mutually benefi cial academic-industryrnengagement and provi des an opportunity for APCOM to take a lead role in identifying the researchrnand development agenda for the future.
