Drivers find it difficult to drive at the limits of physical adhesion hetween the tires and the road.In a crash imminent situation,a driver's first action is expected to be a very hard application of the brake pedal and rapidly turn the steering wheel by a large amount.But these maneuvers always worsen vehicle handling instead keeping vehicle stable.Recent analysis of real worlcl accidents in the USA suggests that Electronic Stability Program(ESP) can be remarkably effective at preventing loss-of-control accidents.Many tests for ESP performance evaluation such as lane change test,fishhook test and so on,are developed for dynamic testing at constant speed.However most of the existing test methods are unlikely to be suitable for assessing ESP.Because it's difficult to imitate the driver's excessive maneuver in real traffic situation,and the ESP performance of reducing driver's excessive operation is not able to be tested and verified in above tests.Based on traditional ESP ohstacle avoidance tests,a novel test method for validating performance promotion of vehicle equipped ESP is proposed in this paper,which is named as two-thirds avoidance path passing test.Finally,the test approach for validating performance promoted by ESP is carried out on a fixed driver simulator in the study.The test results show that the new test approach is proved to have the advantages of eliciting drivers'crash avoidance behavior and assessing ESP performance.
