The invention relates to a method (10) for locating a key of a motor vehicle. In the method (10), the location of the key within range of the motor vehicle is checked first. When the key is within range of the motor vehicle, the actuation of an unlocking unit is then awaited. When the key is within range of the motor vehicle and after the unlocking unit has been actuated, at least one vehicle door is now unlocked. According to the invention, when the unlocking unit is actuated, the duration of the actuation of the unlocking unit is checked. When a predefined duration threshold is exceeded, in addition to unlocking the at least one vehicle door, the key of the motor vehicle vibrates and/or beeps. Optionally, the search for the key can also be initiated with the activation/deactivation unit of the motor vehicle if the key is within range and the activation/deactivation unit has been actuated for longer than a predefined duration threshold.
