The present application relates to a Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactisHEM20-01 strain (KCTC14143BP), and a composition comprising the strain for treating, preventing, or alleviating depression. Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HEM20-01 strain (KCTC14143BP) according to one embodiment of the present invention can treat or prevent depression by reducing corticosterone, endotoxins, and inflammatory cytokines, and thus can be applied to pharmaceutical compositions, food compositions, functional health food compositions, and the like.
