The present invention suppresses dexamethasone-induced muscular atrophy by reducing the expression of muscle atrophy F-box (MAFbx), a gene related to muscle atrophy It relates to a method and a green tea extract for inhibiting dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy using the same. Sarcopenia refers to a decrease in muscle mass and strength that accompanies aging, and causes considerable difficulties in performing normal daily activities. Glucocorticoids (GCs) are frequently used because they can expect immediate efficacy in various diseases, but high dose or continuous use of GCs may cause muscle atrophy. Green tea extract (GTE) contributes to a wide range of health benefits, including cardiovascular disease. However, the effect of GTE on muscle atrophy has not been fully elucidated. In the present invention, green tea extract suppressed dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy in C2C12 myotubes by reducing the expression of MaFbx. Moreover, in C57BL/6 mice with dexamethasone-induced muscle loss, oral administration of GTE (2000 mg/kg) improved the running time and grip strength on the treadmill, thereby restoring the dexamethasone-induced muscle function loss to some extent. GTE also protected the reduction of muscle weight and muscle fiber size of the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscles.
