PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting system and a method for characterizing a space for lighting. The present specification discloses a lighting system including an array of LED light sources that emit light encoded by a modulation pattern, an array of sensors, and a spatial characterization unit. The array of sensors receives the synchrotron radiation scattered by the object. Each sensor uses a modulation pattern to determine the distance between the corresponding light source and the object. The spatial characterization unit uses the distance from each sensor to generate an altitude map showing the presence of an object. The altitude map includes a color map, and at least one of the sensors compensates for the difference in spectral reflectance of at least one object (121,122) with the additional information provided by the color map.
