Miners' dress and personal equipments.-Relates to apparatus for supplying fresh air to persons employed in mines, spinning - mills, chemical factories, foundries, and other places in which the atmosphere is laden with dust, fumes, &c. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, air from an external source is led by a flexible tube into a pipe 3 on the helmet 1 and passes by side tubes 5 to a piece 9 from which it is delivered near the mouth and nose of the wearer. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which a light structure 17 fixed on the head by straps 24, 25, 26 receives the air and discharges it downwards over the face through a gauzecovered opening. Side-pieces 21 are provided to exclude the air of the room. In places ventilated by fans, these create sufficient vacuum to draw the air into the helmets, but in other cases air may be forced into them.
