Trade effluent, refuse soap suds, &c. are supplied to the trough 3 through the pipe 2, sprayed with acid from the pipe 41, and directed through a hinged or sliding door into one of the tanks 1. The acid and sud are thoroughly mixed by agitators 51, 61, the blades of which are either arranged so that both sets give the liquid a downward motion or so that the upper set tends to turn the liquid downward while the lower tends to move it upward. Solid impurities are then allowed to settle, and the water is drawn off from beneath the grease through a trap 12 consisting of a chamber with V-shaped slots surrounding a pipe 13. After the removal of the water, the grease is again agitated to allow of its removal through the pipe 15. Specification No. 555, A.D. 1899, is referred to.
