Propeller shafts, preventing corrosion of. - Propeller shafts are protected by first applying a coat of a substance capable of resisting salt water but soluble in benzine or the like for removal purposes, the substances preferred being paraffin wax, rubber or gutta-percha glue, or the like. A second covering to protect the first coating against mechanical damage comprises layers of rubber, gutta-percha, paints, asphalt, tar or the like, or a mixture of these. In an alternative method, layers of tape, strips or threads of cloth or textile, plaited, or other fabrics are used. This second coating can be readily torn off, and the first coating washed off, when the shaft is to be inspected.
