Ratchet gearing.-Relates to means for transforming reciprocating into continuous rotary motion, and consists in inserting one or more springs in a single length of wire or rope passing round the driven pulley or the like, both the extremities of the rope being connected to the driving-member. As shown in Fig. 1, a wire 1 passes from an oscillating beam 2, first round the driven drum 4, then round a drum 6. again round the drum 4 in the reverse direction. and back to the beam 2. Springs 7 are interposed in the lengths of the wire between the drums 4, 6. The two portions of the wire alternately drive the drum 4 and slip thereon, according to the direction of movement of the beam 2. The device shown in Fig. 1 is preferably duplicated, the two portions differing in phase. In a modification, the pulley 6 is dispensed with. In another modification, Fig. 7, a disk 2 replaces the beam 2 of Fig. 1. As shown, the uniformly rotating cam 13 drives a rod 141 which slides in an adjustable guide and is pivoted to a crank 18, which transmits reciprocating movements to the disk 2 by means of a crank 22 and rods 23.
