Metal-heating furnaces; discharging.-A furnace or muffle for annealing cartridge cases and the like consists of an elongated chamber through which the articles are conveyed by a travelling chain d and exposed to the flames from Bunsen burners arranged at each side at the middle. The ends of the chamber are partly closed by depending projections a' to form a heat chamber at the top, and the centre of the roof of the chamber is formed with projections or serrations a2 where the flames impinge upon it. The articles are mounted on pins projecting upwardly from the chain and may be rotated during their passage through the furnace by frictional contact with a spring-pressed bar at one side, or otherwise. As they leave the furnace, the articles are deflected to one side or the other by inclined bars s mounted on pivots as shown in Fig. 4, and fall into receptacles. Speed-reducing belt-gearing is employed in the driving of the travelling chain. In a modification, the articles are carried in circular tray; revolubly mounted on the chain.
