Computing - apparatus; cubical contents; measuring.-An apparatus for obtaining the mean diameter of a known length of wire or other cylindrical body, without detachment from the main body thereof, from the quantity of mercury displaced by its immersion therein, consists of three glass tubes a1, b, c screwed into a base and connected by a channel g, taps d, c, f being provided at the bases of the tubes. Of the three tubes, the tubes b, c are used for all operations, but the tube a' is replaceable, one of a diameter approximating to that of the wire to be tested being used. The tube c is of the greatest diameter and serves as reservoir for the mercury, the tube b is provided with an adjustably mounted scale, and the tube c is formed with a notch o, the lip l of which is level with the zero point of the scale. A versel r supported on hooks h is provided to catch the mercurv which overflows at the lip l. In operation it is necessary first to calibrate the device, and this is done by first filling all the tubes with mercury until the lip and the zero scale reading are reached, final adjustment being given, after the tap f of the reservoir has been closed, by means of a screw m projecting into the passage g. A standard length of wire of known diameter and specific gravity is then held immersed in the liquid by an adjustable holder y, the displaced mercury collected in the vessel r is weighed and the scale reading in the tube b noted when the wire is withdrawn. From data resulting from the employment of a number of wires of different diameters with the various scale tubes, tables and curves are compiled and the diameter of a wire can be determined from the reading of the mercury level in the scale tube b after the removal of the wire from the gauging tube a', the standard length of the wire having been marked thereon prior to immersion. The device is stated to be particularly applicable for obtaining the diameter of insulated wires in place of the use of a calliper gauge as usually adopted. When used for very fine wires, narrow gauging and scale tubes are employed and the lower end of the fine wire is held by fastening it to a screw s' provided with a hole h1 and situated at the bottom of the gauging tube down which the wire is threaded after it has been temporarily raided from its base. The gauging tube is not provided with a lip and in operation the scale tube is filled, its tap closed and the mercury adjusted in the gauging tube until the difference in level is equal to the standard length. Both tubes are cut off from the reservoir and the diameter of the wire is calculated from readings taken after the two have been put into communication. Specification 5142/11 is referred to.
