Coal-cutting machines.-In a mining and quarrying machine, particularly adapted for use in coal &c. and comprising a rotating and reciprocating cutter-bar, the driving-connexion is obtained by forming on a portion of the cutterbar A longitudinal recesses E, leaving keys 1 between them, and by forming in the bore of the driving-wheel C similar recesses, into which the keys fit. The bases of the recesses may lie on circles corresponding to the periphery of the cutter-bar and the bore of the driving-wheel respectively. The sides of the keys may be radial or parallel. Journal portions are formed on each side of the driving-portion of the cutter-bar and may have a diameter equal to that of the driving-portion; or one journal portion may be of greater diameter, and the other of less diameter than the driving-portion. The cutter-bar may be reciprocated from the driving-wheel C through worm gearing C', D and connecting-rods D2.
