Hydraulic rams. - Apparatus for transforming the pressure and output of a fluid currant on the principle of the hydraulic ram comprises an inlet chamber 1 for the primary current communicating with a number of conduits 4, the discharge ends of which are controlled by a rotary valve 5 provided with ports 9, 7 for connecting the conduits alternately to a low-pressure, chamber 10 and a delivery pipe 8 respectively. The rotary shaft 6 of the valve 5 may carry an axially adjustable valve 14 for varying the communication between the chamber 1 and the conduits 4. Conversely, if a high pressure current is introduced by the pipe 8, low pressure fluid in the chamber 10 will be drawn through the pipes 4 and a current of greater volume but diminished pressure will be delivered from the chamber 1. In the multi-stage form shown in Fig. 5, the primary current passes from the inlet chamber 26 through a number of conduits 28 controlled by two rotary valves 29, 32. The fluid passes from each conduit successively through chambers 33, 34, 35, 30 at successively higher pressures to the dedivery passage 31. Additional chambers 40, 41 may be included in the series. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the fluid passes from the inlet chamber 43 through the multiple conduits 44 and from the conduits alternately into the low pressure chamber 45 and the high pressure delivery passage 49. The rotary valve 48 is carried by a sleeve 47 which may be axially adjusted by the differential nut 53 to hold the valve face close to the ends of the conduits 44. Each conduit is connected by a passage 57 to an expansion chamber 54 to relieve excessive pressure when the wall of the valve closes the end of the conduit. In the form shown in Fig. 13, a rotary pump 77 with inlet 78 and delivery 81 discharges into a number of conduits 84 controlled by rotary valves 82, 83 through which the conduits deliver alternately into the suction chambers 79, 80 of the pump and the high pressure chambers 89, 90 of the pressure transformer.
