[Class 87 (ii).] A screw press driven by friction-gearing is started and stopped through the agency of a cam controlled by a clutch which is operated by a rotating abutment.on the pressure screw spindle. Thus, at a certain point in the downward travel of the ram the projection 30 on the screw spindle 4 contacts with a lever and exerts a pull on the link 32 which raises the lever 26 against the action of the spring 29 to release a latch 27 and thus allows the spring 25 to move the lever 23 to engage the clutch members 19, 20. The clutch rotates the cam 14 through the medium of the belt drive 15, and the cam communicates movement to the verticallysliding rod 7 which slides the friction wheels 1, 2 axially through the agency of the bent lever 6. The cam is shaped to give a preliminary downward drive of the screw for initial pressure, a short upward drive for de-aeration, a second downward drive for the main pressure and a final upward drive to permit removal of the moulding article, which continues until a projection 44 moving with the ram strikes a member 46 on the rod 7 and reverses the drive to commence the next operation. After one complete revolution of the cam, the clutch is uncoupled temporarily by a wedge-shaped face cam on the outer surface of the disc 21 which engages the latch 27 and forces both levers 23, 26 rearwardly against the action of the spring 25. A lateral stop 35, Fig. 7, engages the side of the projection 27 and ensures that the cam always comes to rest in the same position. The projection on the cam which produces the main pressure is adjustable both radially and peripherally.
