Pattern effects, e.g. embossed, glazed, schreinered or coloured effects, are produced upon a textile fabric by impregnating it with materials or components leading to the formation of an amido-formaldehyde synthetic resin, applying to selected areas, e.g. by printing, before or after such impregnation, a reagent inhibiting formation of the resin, heating to form the resin on the unselected areas and washing out the resin components and the inhibiting reagent from the selected areas. The impregnation may be effected throughout the fabric or locally by printing in areas overlapping the selected areas. Specified resins are those from urea, thiourea or dicyandiamide and formaldehyde and specified inhibiting reagents are piperazine, piperidine, acetaldehyde-ammonia, hexamethylenetetramine, ammonium acetate, sulphate, phosphate or thiocyanate, urea, thiourea, guanidine, amylamine, triethanolamine, glycine, aniline, p-phenylenediamine, diphenylamine and m-aminophenol. Dyestuffs may be incorporated in the printing pastes or the already printed and heat-treated fabric may be dyed with substantive dyestuffs which are taken up preferentially or exclusively in the selected areas. The following examples are specified: (1) a viscose artificial silk fabric is impregnated with a solution made by reacting urea with formaldehyde in a mildly alkaline solution for 15 minutes at 40--45 DEG C., neutralizing and adding formaldehyde and formamide, and the impregnated fabric is dried, printed with gum tragacanth thickening containing glycine solution, dried, embossed, heated for 50 seconds at 200 DEG C., washed and soaped to obtain a flat pattern on an embossed ground; (2) a viscose artificial silk fabric, dyed with Chlorazol black E, is impregnated with a solution made by reacting urea with formaldehyde as in (1), neutralizing and adding formaldehyde and acetic acid, and the impregnated fabric is dried, printed with gum tragacanth thickening containing piperidine, dried, glazed in a friction calender, heated and finished as in (1);; the glazing is retained only in the unprinted parts; (3) a fabric having a cotton warp and a viscose artificial silk weft is impregnated as in (2) with addition to the solution of Acid scarlet 4R and the impregnated fabric is dried, printed with gum tragacanth thickening containing hexamethylenetetramine solution, dried, embossed, heated and finished as in (1) to obtain a white pattern on a red embossed ground; (4) a viscose artificial silk fabric is impregnated as in (2) but using additional acetic acid in the solution, dried, printed with gum tragacanth thickening containing urea and Indigosol scarlet HB, dried, embossed, heated as in (1), developed in a solution containing sodium bichromate and sulphuric acid, rinsed and soaped to obtain a red flat pattern on a white embossed ground; (5) a viscose artificial silk fabric is impregnated as in (2) with addition to the solution of Lissamine fast yellow 2G and the impregnated fabric is dried, printed with a paste containing gum tragacanth thickening, urea and Soledon brilliant purple RR, dried, embossed, heated as in (1), developed in a solution containing sodium bichromate and sulphuric acid, rinsed and soaped to obtain a violet flat pattern on a yellow embossed ground; (6) a fabric having a cotton warp and a viscose artificial silk weft is impregnated as in (4), dried, printed with gum tragacanth thickening containing ammonium acetate solution, dried, heated as in (1), washed, dyed with Benzo fast scarlet 4BS, washed and dried to obtain a deep red pattern on a slightly tinted ground; (7) a viscose artificial silk fabric is impregnated as in (6), printed with gum tragacanth thickening containing urea solution, over-printed with Carob bean thickening containing a solution of Acid scarlet 4R, embossed, heated as in (1), washed and soaped to obtain a white flat pattern on an embossed ground which is partly red; (8) a viscose artificial silk fabric is printed with gum tragacanth thickening containing urea solution, dried, over-printed with a paste containing Carob bean thickening, Acid scarlet 4R and a solution obtained by reacting urea with formaldehyde in mildly alkaline solution for 15 minutes at 40--45 DEG C., neutralizing and adding formaldehyde and acetic acid, and the printed fabric is dried, embossed and heated as in (1) to obtain a white flat ground and a cover pattern which is coloured and embossed only in the unresisted parts.
