564,617. Uniting by fusion. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and GILLIVER, G. March 30, 1943, No. 5099. Addition to 558,472. [Class 83 (iv)] A hand tool for the electric fusion-welding of wires as described in the parent Specification, comprises a handle consisting of a casing with a recess in one end to receive the wires, a pair of electrodes adjacent the recess to be bridged by the wires to be joined, which are clamped to one electrode by a clamping piece on a hinged member which serves also as a shield over the recess and is connected to and operated by a trigger lever which also closes a welding switch mounted in the casing. The casing may consist of two moulded parts 1, 2, secured together by screws and nuts and having recesses 25 to receive the wires to be joined. In the part 1 is pivoted at 6 a spring-returned trigger 4 which is connected by a link 7 to a member 3 pivoted at 5, which carries on a spring 23 a removable block carrying a carbon electrode 22, which co-operates with a carbon electrode 20 on a block carried by a spring 18 connected to one terminal of the circuit to grip the wires to be welded. The outer end of the member 3 has a groove 26 to fit over a projection 27 on the casing to act as a shield to protect the eyes from the flash accompanying the welding operation. The electrode 21 connected to the other terminal of the circuit through a resistance 17 is carried by a block slidable on a spring 19. The spring 18 is connected to its terminal through a switch comprising contact springs 11, 12. The casing has co-operating stops and recesses to hold in position the springs which may be provided with tongues so that they may, previous to assembly, be fusion welded to their conductors. When the trigger is pressed the carbon 22 clamps the wires on the resiliently mounted carbon 20, the switch is closed by the extension 10 on the trigger and the wires are fused from the carbon 21 so that the circuit opens. The trigger may then be released and the wires withdrawn. The casing is provided with apertures 24 for the discharge of waste material formed during welding. Specification 560,500 also is referred to.
