[Class 100(ii)] [Also in Groups VII and XV] In apparatus for producing creases or corrugations in linen or like flexible sheet material. the material is fed between a grooved member and a plurality of rollers formed with peripheral fins or ribs engag- 'ing the interstices of the grooved member, means being provided for selectively bring- ing the rollers into and out of operation. As shown as applied to an apparatus for creasing material for application to the spines of books, the material 46, Fig. 2, is fed from a supply spool 47, over a tensioning post 51 to the creasing device, which comprises a cylinder 1 mounted on a vertical shaft 4, Fig. 1, and formed with a plurality of parallel equidistantly spaced circumferential grooves 13 in which are engaged annular fins or ribs 14 formed on the peripheries of rollers 15. The material 46 then passes adhesive applying means 45 and over a guiding barrel 44, formed with similar grooves to the cylinder 1, to the body of the machine 50 where it is fed in known manner to the spines of the books 52. The rollers 15 are arranged with a minimum number of fins on the first roller to engage the material rising uniformly to a maximum on the last roller. Each roller is mounted on a centre pin 16 to rotate in a yoke consisting of parallel pins 18 bridged by a bar 19 and individual movement away from and towards the cylinder 1 is effected by a cam engaging the bar 19 and opposed springs 33. The pins 18 pass through flanges 22 on a part annular bar 23 pivoted at 24 to a bracket 8 carrying the cylinder 1 and locked in position by a spring bolt 25. The roller 15 can thus be swung into and out of operative position. The depth of bite of the fins 14 in the grooves can be adjusted by means of nuts 20, 21 on the pins 18. The bracket 8 is connected by a lug 10 to the mid point of a lever 9 which is connected at one end to a rod 38 pivoted to the bracket and at the other end to a rod 40 pivoted to a frame member 42. This member 42 carries an upper belt conveyer 53 which in co-operation with a lower belt 43a, feeds the books 52 through the machine. The frame 42 is adjusted vertically in accordance with the thickness of the books and, by the connections 40, 9, 10, 38, the cylinder 1 is also adjusted but through only half the amount so that the centre of the cylinder is kept in alignment with the centre of the books. The cylinder may be electrically heated.
