[Class 130] A continuous-rod filter-tip machine in which a continuous rod of tobacco is compressed before being allowed to expand as it passes through a tube 7. comprises a chamber 13 in a member 9, which is intermittently moved to replace a portion of the tobacco rod by a filter tip in another chamber, and a duct 16 leading to the usual garniture in which the paper wrapping is applied. The machine is similar to that described in Specification 414,087, but binding of the tobacco is prevented. The tobacco, which has been showered on to a tape 2 is compressed by a driven roller 3 and a free roller 4, an intermediary guide-block 6 being provided. The tube 7 gradually increases in bore and carries a perforated plate 8. The member 9 comprises a drum which is intermittently moved about a shaft 10 to bring a series of bores 13 in succession into line with the tube 7. The duct 16 is followed by a tubular part 17 cut away to accommodate the endless belt and the cigarette paper 19 coming over a roller 20 and moving on to the garniture. The bores 13 and the ducts 16, 17 both have greater diameter than the adjacent end of the tube 7. Mouthpiece stubs 154 are fed from a hopper 22 to a chamber 13 by a plunger 50 which is reciprocated by a pin on a disc 44. The drum is moved by a cam on the shaft 34 to sever the tobacco between the plate 8 and the duct 16, and to replace it by a stub in the next chamber, the severed tobacco being ejected later by a further plunger 51 moved simultaneously by a plunger 50, springs 53 preventing damage if jamming occurs. The tobacco carrying tape 2 moves at a faster rate than the paper 19.
