A paste for forming heat-resisting insulating coatings on metals comprises powdered silica of particle size not more than 10 microns, a sodium silicate binder and water. Natural stone, clay or mud containing a high proportion of the fine silica as quartz may be used alone or mixed with pure silica. In an example, 80 parts of silica to 15 parts of sodium silicate (1 Na2O : 2 SiO2) are used.
