716,914. Razors. EWING SELF - SHARPENING RAZOR CO. May 2, 1952, No. 11114/52. Class 30 [Also in Group XXIIIj A self-sharpening safety razor comprises a handle, a head, in which a blade holder containing a blade, is pivotally mounted, and a roller, having a sharpening surface, is rotatably mounted, the roller being longitudinally slotted to receive the cutting edge of the blade so that the blade is swung about the pivotal mounting of the holder to present alternate sides to the sharpening surface when the roller is rotated in alternate directions, yieldable means to position the blade in a plane radial with respect to the roller axis when the blade lies in the slot and resisting, equally, swinging movement of the blade in either direction, and releasable means to secure the roller against rotation and to lock the blade in shaving position being provided. As shown, a blade 25 is a friction fit or is riveted in a blade holder 24, pivotally mounted by a shaft 22 and having a flat face 32 against which one end 34 of a spring 36 presses. The other end cf the spring is secured by a nut 38 and spring 42 against a fulcrum 40 in the throat of the razor head. A solid aluminium roller 46 mounted by a shaft 44 between side walls 16, 18 of the razor head has a spiral ridge 48 and is slotted at 47, the base of the slot being cut back arcuately at 50, 52. Axial play of the shaft 44 allows its offset end 56 to be released from a seat 54 in the roller is that the roller is free to rotate when run across the hand in either direction to sharpen alternate sides of the cutting edge as shown in Fig. 5. When the roller is locked against rotation the lip of the roller slot forms or guard and may be provided with spaced projections. In a modification the razor head is formed by a bifurcation of the handle which supports the side walls, pivotal movement of the blade holder being dimited by the engagement of a pin extending from the flat of the blade holder with a slot in the spring 36.
