An electromagnet for operating a piston valve 56 consists of a coil 25 moving axially in an annular air-gap 17SP1/SP, an oppositely moving compensating mass 45 giving balance for axial accelerations. The coil is mounted on a carrier tube 35 which is supported on disc springs 21, 31 and passes through an axial hole in the energizing magnet 16. The piston valve 56 is operated by a push-rod 54 passing through the tube and engaging a plug 49 at its end. The ring-shaped balance weight 45 is carried on four levers 40, 41 which are secured through flexible springs to the carrier and weight at either end, and are centrally pivoted on a further series of flexible springs 39. The coil is restored by a spring 50.
