A drinking appliance for birds or animals comprises a receptacle 10 fitted with an inlet pipe 11 for water and formed at the upper edge of the side opposite the pipe 11 with a hook 13. The flange 16 of a trough 15 fits into the hook 13, being secured in position by a pin 18, the nett result being that the trough can pivot in a vertical plane relative to the receptacle 10. Water from the receptacle enters the trough via holes 20 until the trough swills sufficiently for the rubber pad 21 to close the opening 12 of the inlet pipe, the holes 20 being at such a height that the supply ceases before the water level in the trough reaches the holes. As the water level in the trough drops, the trough floats pivots about the pin 18 to uncover the opening 12. The construction is such that the trough may be removed easily for cleaning purposes, and an electric heater may be fitted in the receptacle.
