A method of improving the load-bearing capacity of soil at sites where soft soil layers having a low load-bearing capacity are present above soil layers having a high load-bearing capacity. The method comprises bringing to the surface over the whole area to be improved soil from the sub-stratum 2 of soil having a high bearing capacity, replacing this excavated soil 2SP1/SP with soil 1SP1/SP from the upper stratum 1 of soil of low bearing capacity, and placing the excavated soil 2SP1/SP on top of the soil 1SP1/SP filled into the excavated space in the sub-stratum 2. The method can be fulfilled by open excavation or by fluid-mining procedures involving the passing of flushing fluid into the sub-stratum through pipes 3 and the withdrawal of the resultant suspension of the sub-stratum earth and fluid up through further pipes.
