[Also in Division F4] The light source of a vehicle headlamp comprises a filament enclosed in an envelope secured tc a base member and a light refracting medium composed of pyramidal shaped bodies of transparent glass secured to the envelope or to a casing closely surrounding the envelope, by means of a low melting point glass and having their bases substantially tangential to the envelope and their apices extending away from the filament so that the incident light is refracted through approximately 90 degrees. A zone free from the refracting medium may be provided on one side and may extend to terminate at diametrically opposed sides of the envelope. In the form shown, the refracting medium 3 covers the envelope surface except for a diamond-shaped zone 4 having an enlargement 7 of elliptical shape on the level with the filaments 5, 6 on one side. In a modification, an additional diamond shaped clear space of smaller size may be provided opposite the space 4.
