In packing means for bottles of the kind in which the bottles are arranged in a box 1 with the necks 9 facing alternately in opposite directions, an insert for supporting the shoulders 6 of the bottles comprises two separate parts placed back-to-back, each part having sockets 10 facing in one direction only to support the oppositely-facing shoulders 6, and apertures 8 through which the necks 9 extend. The sockets 10 are cylindrical so that four identical insert parts can be used, one at each end of the box supporting the bases of the bottles and two back-to-back at the middle supporting the shoulders. To fill the box the insert 4 is placed on the bottom and six bottles placed upright with their bases in six sockets 10, a second insert 4a is then placed over the necks with the sockets 10 facing downwardly. A third insert 4b turned through 180 degrees is then placed back-to-back on the second, i.e. with the sockets 10 facing upwardly, and six further bottles are inverted into these sockets. Finally, a fourth insert 4c is placed with the sockets 10 engaging the bases of the inverted bottles and flaps 2 closed to seal the box.
