Collapsed tubular four-sided cartons having closure flaps at each end, have flaps bent outwards from the plane of the sides prior to setting up by application of diagonal external pressure, to stiffen the sides during the application of the pressure. The flat cartons are fed from the base of a stack 7 by pushers 11 pivoted on chains 10 and held in engaging position by rails 15. Strips 16 hold the sides, 1 2 in contact and fixed members 18-20 first separate then fold back the flaps 3, 4. Finally cam-bars 23 engage, first dogs 21, pivoted on the chains, to swing them up in front of the leading edge of the cartons, and then the pushers 13 to further rotate them, thus pressing the carton trailing edge towards the leading edge to set it up as shown at the left of Fig. 2.
